Why the JCC

Voter Registration is the Key to Success

While the Jewish community is a large and growing proportion of the Marine Park Community, with an estimated base of over 850 families, its constituents are largely unregistered voters, or voters registered in their initiaplace of residence. With minimal impact to their re-election status, unregistered voters do not carry much weight with the local politicians who are needed to sponsor community changes, and advocate on behalf of the community. Elected officials take an interest in communities where the people are active and are working together to improve the community. The first step in doing this is registering to vote. If an elected official sees that most people in a community do not vote and are not registered, then the needs of that community will receive a low priority and will not be taken seriously. The simple fact is that the Jewish community of Marine Park needs to start registering its residents to vote in order to have a voice in the political process.

The JCC aims to streamline this process through the appointment of numerous volunteers that will help register persons on a shul by shul basis. The registration process is quick and straightforward. A common misperception is that jury lists are pulled only from voter registration rolls. In reality, however, jury duty candidates are largely chosen from the Department of Motor Vehicles database, which is required by law to make its lists available to the Federal and State Jury Services. The JCC believes voter registration is the key success variable to meeting its stated objectives and urges all Marine Park residents to take a few moments of their time to register to vote.

Promoting Local Businesses

The Marine Park Community continues to flourish, with several businesses expanding into the neighborhood over the past several years, including a large Kosher grocery store and a premium Kosher steak house. In an effort to help promote this growth, JCCMP aims to create a community phone book that will be made available to Marine Park residents free of charge to encourage consumers to patronize local businesses through discount cards and promotional sales.

Community Events

JCCMP will arrange for prominent speakers and lecturers to address and inspire residents on issues affecting the community. We will also initiate programs for children and tots such as barbeques and concerts in the park, as well as Sunday recreational and educational programs.

Volunteering for the JCCMP

So what's next? What can I do to help my community? We are looking for people to represent their shul for the JCCMP for the following programs:

* Project managers - responsible for coordinating voter & JCCMP registration for every man and women in your shul.
* Liasons – help update the JCCMP with monthly shul mailing list as well as recent shul's simchas to be posted on the JCCMP website for the whole community to see.
* Community phone book administrator – assure people in your shul fill out an application for the phone book.
* Sales managers - help us hire people to sell ad space in the community phone book (people looking to make extra money in their spare time will receive 20% of the sale of the space.)
* Writers - for our monthly newsletter and website news
* Volunteers - for general support

JCCMP is committed to address problems that detract from a higher quality of life for its members. However, we cannot accomplish
our objectives alone. We need your help. This is a unique opportunity to affect positive changes in your community that will have a direct impact on your family for many years to come. If you are interested in volunteering for the JCCMP, please email us at volunteer@JCCMP.org with your contact information. Thank you for your interest.
